Independent: Candidates, Campaign Money & Sources

A party name can describe a political organization, a ballot label or an affiliation reported in a filing. The source and jurisdiction determine which meaning applies.

Start with the source’s label

A campaign filing and an official ballot can use party labels for different purposes. The same abbreviation may not carry the same meaning in every source or country. Read the full name, jurisdiction and record type before joining datasets or interpreting an affiliation.

Do not turn a filing count into a membership count

A list of candidates who reported a party affiliation is not a census of party members, a certified ballot roster or a measure of public support. Filings can include former candidates, different election stages and multiple cycles. Electionpedia keeps the record scope visible so a numerical comparison is not mistaken for an opinion poll.

Original affiliation codes remain visible on individual records. The purple phoenix is Electionpedia’s custom independent symbol, not an official party emblem. Independents have no common platform or party leadership.

113 of 292 records have a financial summary. Missing summaries are excluded, not counted as zero. These are candidate-level sums across different reporting dates—not the party organization’s accounts, unique donor totals, or national/state/local totals. Transfers can appear in more than one campaign’s records. Open each candidate for the reporting period and source.
