How to interpret this record

U.S. Political Parties & Independent Candidates

A party name can describe a political organization, a ballot label or an affiliation reported in a filing. The source and jurisdiction determine which meaning applies.

Start with the source’s label

A campaign filing and an official ballot can use party labels for different purposes. The same abbreviation may not carry the same meaning in every source or country. Read the full name, jurisdiction and record type before joining datasets or interpreting an affiliation.

Do not turn a filing count into a membership count

A list of candidates who reported a party affiliation is not a census of party members, a certified ballot roster or a measure of public support. Filings can include former candidates, different election stages and multiple cycles. Electionpedia keeps the record scope visible so a numerical comparison is not mistaken for an opinion poll.

These are 2026-cycle federal filing records, not a certified ballot or membership list. Candidate data was checked 2026-10-16. A filing can remain after a person withdraws. State and local party coverage is not included in these totals.

Independent & other affiliation categories

These labels are not interchangeable, and they do not describe a single shared party platform.

Logos & symbol credits

Party artwork is reproduced from the linked party websites for identification; it does not imply endorsement. The phoenix is Electionpedia’s independent symbol. Lettered circles identify the exact affiliation code and are not official party emblems.

Unresolved or unlisted affiliations

A missing party is not an independent candidate. Codes without a verified mapping retain their exact source label. Historical or state-specific labels may require a different source; we do not infer a party from a candidate’s name.

A recognized affiliation without matching federal filings also leads here. That is a coverage gap in this snapshot—not evidence that the party has no members or candidates.
